Audrey Eu's experience of the event (a personal perspective):

Audrey Eu

"I arrived at about 7 am, an hour earlier than the scheduled time, and the Park was already filled with people. I was staying with a group of the civic party members all wearing the " Donald Tsang you dont represent me" tee shirt. I was standing on a chair inside one of the three entrances (the one near the big screen) to greet the people as they entered the park. From where I stood and because I was standing on the chair I could see far into the street ahead. My vision was filled with waves and waves of bobbling heads, it was a bit like 1st July 2003. By 8 pm when the ceremony was about to start I thought of moving into the park and finding a place to sit down but that was when the wave became the thickest. I thought i would stand there a bit longer until the crowd thinned out but they just kept coming. We had to help to direct the traffic and ask the people to move onto the grass as all the six football pitches and the basket ball courts were also filled. By the time the crowd got thinner it was already 8.30 pm and there was just no way i could get inside the park. it was absolutely packed. I felt bad because a friend of mine joined me for the first time and because of my delay she was not able to feel the atmosphere of the vigil. We could only stay at the fringe near the entrance and we had no candle and no programme and we could not hear the sound or see the screen at the other end of the park. I dont know how they counted the numbers but there were definitely many many like us at the fringes. There were many young people and many of them came for the first time. My students who came to stay with me for two weeks were all determined to go with their friends and it was their first time. They told me in order to get closer they had to climb or sneak through police cordons."
