The Energy of Everything Series, 2003

In the series, "The Energy of Everything" I explore the atomic omnipresent similarity in all matter.

"As Above, So Below"                                                ©2003

I am intrigued by the idea that we are composed of essentially the same things, simply rearranged in different patterns and vibrating at different pitches. Reminiscent of protons, electrons and neutrons, the backgrounds in this series bubble with a simple allover pattern.

"Fear of Change "                                                          ©2003

The forms become childlike, as the idea is more abstract yet basic. A flat black and white line design superimposed over that soupy pattern, stimulates the shock sometimes experienced when one balances between the absolute and the effervescent.

"The Beauty of Destruction"                                    ©2003

Art is a fantastic place for discovery and exploration. Often when I'm painting, I create a sanctuary to play, have fun and release. I find myself entertaining emotions, mental-image pictures, patterns, ideas, lost dreams, future aspirations and desires. Sometimes, they are very demanding and ask for things like piping hot tea and fresh baked scones. Usually, I only give them color, pattern and if they are on their best behavior, texture. Eventually, when we've had a thorough chat, seen eye to eye, given each other a proper 'hello' if you will, the painting "POPS." Layers and layers and layers of bright colored shiny plastic attract and repel me, as an image presents itself. I marvel that it came from my hands, from my subconscious, from my connection to Source.

"The Surface of Change "                                      ©2003

That those are my pictures, that that energy was traveling through my space, that I really feel that way. My mirror reflects back, it's usually amusing, but it ain't always pretty.

Anita's Bio...

Photo of Anita Brey in front of "Merge"

Anita Brey is a contemporary American artist, born in Minnesota in 1971. Her work was first shown in a juried group show at Lakewood Community College while she was still a high school junior. She went on to study photography at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. As her photographs grew in scale, collage and fabric became essential elements. It was at this juncture that she realized two things; firstly, she needed to paint in order create her visions and secondly, she needed to experience more of the world around her. Anita traveled around Europe for two months, lived in Norway for a month or two and eventually found a job in Paris as a nanny. After living in Paris for a year, she moved to Arizona to experience the Great American South West. She graduated in 1996 with a Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting, summa cum laude, from Arizona State University . She was supported with grants from the Contemporary Forum among others.

Presently, Anita lives in San Francisco and paints in her studio across the street from the Cable Car Museum . Her love for pattern, particularly its supernatural and metaphysical aspects, create an underlying structure in her vibrant paintings. Capturing the unseen energetic interactions between people and the world around them inspire her subject matter. Currently, her influences include Paula Rego, Frank Stella, Alex Gray, Tom Tomorrow and Roger Shimomura. Anita prefers to paint on a daily basis, considering it a form of fundamental spiritual practice and just plain fun.

"I know now that the imagination is the domain of the inner world and that the creative is the way to it."
- Deena Metzger

I will not be just a tourist in the world of images, just watching images passing by which I cannot live in, make love to, possess as permanent sources of joy and ecstasy.
- Anais Nin

All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.
- Martin Buber

For art to exist, for any sort of aesthetic activity to exist, a certain physiological precondition is indispensable: intoxication.
- Friedrich Nietzsche
