Cycle Wisdom:
Alive on the Planet
by Cassandra Teurfs
03/03

Brilliantly green hills spotted with stark brown, still bare trees. Spiky green blades of underground bulbs breaking through dark, wet soil. This is a time of transition and of contrast. The black moist earth is greening and we are slowly being called out of our winter hibernation. Even if you remain

very active in the winter, you have still had to wear layers of clothes during the day and keep the heater and blankets on at night. Now the increasing light and heat allow us to expand and open our bodies like the flowers blooming all around us.

Winter was a time of contraction and turning in toward our roots, and Summer will be a time of expansion and reaching out toward our branches. The transitional seasons of Spring and Fall move us along that spectrum. March 20 is the Spring, or Vernal, Equinox. Equal Night, Equal Day. Equal Winter, Equal Summer. Equal Yin, Equal Yang. It is a very dynamic time of great fluctuation, movement, and change.

It is rainy one day and sunny the next. It is still cold at night, but we may get down to a t-shirt in the middle of the day. With the changes in the pressure systems that control our weather patterns, we may also experience a shift in our moods. We may be happy and open, ready to take on the year. The next day, we may feel confused, low energy and a little depressed. Such is the nature of change... and of Spring.

My favorite thing to do at this time is to see if I can feel the trees growing. Try going up to an evergreen, and redwoods are really good for this. Notice where last year¹s growth stopped and this year¹s in beginning. The needles or spines of years past have now become hard, weathered, and dark green. The new growth is very soft and super bright green, and I like to call these new extensions ³green fingers.² Touch these green fingers with yours, get real quiet within, and see if you can feel the energy of the tree growing. This may sound crazy, but it is a great feeling.

The feel of oncoming Spring is an extra inviting time of year to allow yourself to be drawn in through all five of your senses into the luscious life of this garden we call home.
